Question:

Cable port broken in back of my television?

I woke up today to find that on the back of television, the metal port sticking out to receive the cable wire had snapped off at its base with the cable wire still attached to it.

Besides having a professional work on it, does anybody have any ideas on how I can secure it? I have duct tape supporting it the best I can, I was just thinking there was a quick easy fix to secure it better.

thanks for your help!

  1. The first answer is a good one if you really need to fix it.  If you're just having issues w/ picture quality you may not need to fix it.

Just get a cheap VCR, attach your incoming cable to the VCR, and use RCA jacks to connect the VCR to your TV  (you can do this with or without a cable box - just plug the main cable into your cable box and connect the cable box output to the VCR input, and make sure your VCR is tuned to the channel used by your cable converter box)...

It doesn't fix the barrel connector, but it's a quick and inexpensive way to 'fix' the picture quality.

  2. You are talking about a female F connector. (that is actually what these things are called...)   You *can* buy them at stores like Radio Shack, but you will have to know how to safely dis-assemble a television set, and have to have certain equipment such as soldering irons and skills to use them, before you can even attempt to repair it.

Your particular TV might have a cable assembly going to the area right behind the connector itself.  If that is the case, right crimping tools and replacement connector might do it.  If it is going to a circuit board, you will need different type of connector.  Either way, you will need to know how to do all of the above.

Unless you are sure, do NOT tackle this type of issues....  a regular non-LCD type television contain a very high voltage circuit that does not completely turn off immediately after you unplug the set.  It *can* kill you under the right circumstances.
