  1. Satellite is better, but depends on the provider and what they offer.  For HD satellite is kicking cable's rear.  I have HD satellite and never had signal problems in bad weather.  Cable cannot compete with satellite on quality and number of channels provided.

  2. If you are cheap like me go with satellite.

We have a HD television so I compared our local cable company and the satellite companies.  Cable doesn't offer very much hd programming at all.  They also try to get you with a cheap introductory rate and then it increases (doubles in our case) in three months.

When comparing the satellite companies I noticed some things about each.  Direct seems to be more sports oriented.  They have the NFL package but it isn't cheap.  Dish offers dual tuner receivers that save you cash.  One receiver will actually control 2 televisons.  We have four tvs so we did 2 dual tuner receivers instead of having to get one on each tv.  This saves us about $10 a month.

If you decide on Dish check out the 722 receiver.  It is a dual tuner HD Dvr receiver.  My wife and I love it.  It's very easy to operate and the picture quality is amazing.

I would also suggest going to a local retailer if you get satellite.  I hit our dish with a lawnmower last summer and called the retailer about it.  They were out there within an hour and fixed it.  I have never even heard of that kind of service.  I also didn't have to call an 800 # and go thru a bunch of prompts to talk to somebody....

  3. If by value, you mean the best price - satellite probably has a better price per package.

HOWEVER... and it's a big however... satellite TV is highly unreliable, due to its very nature.  You can bet that your television probably will not work very well (or at all) during rain, snow, and ice storms... even fog has an adverse affect on it.

For reliability, alone, I would opt for cable, if it is an option.

  4. Actually it really depends on what you like to watch.  Cable has much more "on demand" programming so if you like to watch your shows whenever you want and so forth then you might look at cable.

Satellite has everything else including WAY more HD channels with DirectTV (DISH has about the same as cable) and lots more sports including The NFL Network and others if you talking programming.

For quality however you can't beat satellite for sure.  Whereas cable broadcasts some non HD channels in digital quality, ALL of DirectTV's channels are digital and have a clearer picture.

Also, Dan H is absolutely incorrect in regards to Dish and the weather.  If your dish is going out because of fog then it's an installation issue and NOT a signal issue.  Sure you may lose some signal strength when it rains but it has to be coming down EXTREMELY hard for this to occur.  I mean can't see your hand in front of your face hard, and it comes right back once the rain slackens up.  Also, in the winter if you keep some PAM or something on your dish the snow and ice will fall right off and be a non issue.

    I prefer DirectTV myself,
