Caca Bueno calls for safety improvements at Interlagos after Gustavo Sondermann’s fatal accident
Recently, at the Interlagos Circuit in Brazil, a stock car driver, Gustavo Sondermann, suffered a fatal accident.
As a result, Caca Bueno called for some urgent improvements at the circuit before the Formula 1 grand prix is to be held there, as he believes that the track is not safe enough.
“The circuit is very good, the best in the country and internationally approved, but we have a serious problem there. We need to make a change and the ideal one would be an escape area”, said Bueno.
It was a rainy day in Sao Paulo and Sondermann lost control near the up-lift left turn, which is known as the Curva do Café corner, which has recently been unofficially dubbed as the 'Tamburello de Interlagos', as a reference to the confusing fast corner
of the Italian Circuit Imola
This turn has been quite dangerous as back in 2007, Rafael Sperafico was also killed at that same turn after bouncing off the wall into the path of one of his competitors during the race.
Other than that, a motorcycle driver also died at the exact same corner of the circuit back in February this year.
Besides Bueno, Former Formula 1 driver, Luciano Burti, who is a native of Sao Paulo echoed Caca’s words as he also believes that something should be done about this turn as it is a “serious problem”, and in racing, safety is the top priority.
“We need to find the room for that, like bringing down the bleachers for some run-off. Safety must come first. The solution exists and we need unity to make the changes before the next thing happens there”, said Luciano.
Nevertheless, it was very depressing news in the motorsports world and most professionals have called for safety more than anything else in motorsports, as that would encourage drivers to race at their best and enable them to take risks as well.
