Cadel Evans receives a warm reception as he returns home to Melbourne – Cycling News
Australian cyclist Cadel Evans has finally reached home in Melbourne after the victory in last month’s Tour de France as he holds the honour of being the first Australian to win the mega event. Rider who entered the city along with his wife was greeted by
the whole nation as people gathered to see the first glimpse of their local champion.
On returning back home Cadel shared his thoughts as he mentioned that the trip no doubt was long but he is glad that he managed to bring the victory home. He also highlighted that he had a wonderful time during the Tour and loved cycling across France but
the joy of celebrating with the people who have supported you when you were abroad is totally different as he said, “It was a long trip, but I’m happy to be here and happy that everyone is so appreciative to have me home.”
Evans had a wonderful start to the year as he started 2011 with a stage 6 and an overall win at Tirreno Adriatico followed by the win at Tour of Romandie. He did not show up in Giro d’ Italia as he was preparing for what is known as the most prestigious
cycling event in the world, Tour de France.
On returning back home Cadel shared his experience of the tour with media as he stated, “When you’re riding the Tour de France you’re pretty concentrated on each day and each race and so sometimes you forget there’s 20 million people at home cheering on
you, there’s just so much going on in the moment.”
Cadel Evans will be riding from National Gallery of Victorian Federation Square on Friday as his historical win will be celebrated across the city and will be live broadcasted live across Australia.
The 34-year-old has renewed his contract with Team BMC till 2014 although there were quite a few other teams interested to sign up the Australian as he certainly has gained a lot of respect in the cycling world by this big achievement. Cadel Evans is currently
ranked at the first position in UCI’s ranking as he is leading over the Belgian cyclist Philippe Gilbert by 92 points.
