Cadel Evans supports Alberto Contador’s suspension by CAS
The most recent winner of the French Grand Tour, Cadel Evans commented on the recent CAS ruling against the Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador.
Evans mentioned that the decision is a clear indication that the organisers are taking all the necessary measures to clean the sport from drugs.
The 34-year-old supported the decision to ban Contador from professional cycling. He also criticised the fact that it took almost two years to come to a conclusion which was absolutely a waste of time and finances.
Fox news quoted the cyclist as saying, "I think the sport of cycling has done more than enough to prove it is doing the right thing".
"Now it is time for other sports to look at cycling and replicate what cycling does, so the fight against drugs in sport can maybe be beaten one day across all sports", he continued.
Contador was tested positive for clenbuterol during the Tour de France 2010 but Spanish Cycling Federation freed him from the charges in March 2011.
UCI and WADA appealed against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the panel ruled the hearing against Alberto.
The Spaniard is now banned from professional cycling until August 5th. He has also been stripped off the Tour de France 2010 and the Giro d’ Italia 2011 overall victories.
Evans avoided his personal opinion on the cyclist, "I don't know all that goes on behind there and what all the real facts are and so on. I go along and do my job and that's up to the authorities to decide”.
Alberto is now prohibited to ride the Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia and the 2012 Olympic Games. His only Grand Tour appearance for the season ahead will be the Vuelta a Espana 2012.
Cadel Evans won the overall classifications at the Tour de France 2011and overcame Andy Schleck by a convincing margin of 1 minute and 34 seconds.
The Australian is now looking ahead at the Tour de France 2012 and he is looking good to make it two in a row at the coming edition of the race.
