Cadel Evans to win the Australian Cyclist of the year award
An outstanding year for Australian Cycling is coming to an end which takes us to the occasion where such performances are acknowledged, Australian Cyclist of the year Awards. The main award is up for contestation yet again with all the riders queuing up
already to receive the honours.
It is believed that the winner of Tour de France 2011, Cadel Evans, will be declared the Best Australian Cyclist for 2011. He has been a top class rider since many years but his brilliant performance at the Tour this year earned him immense fame and respect.
Evans managed to overcome the strong duo, Andy Schleck and Frank Schleck, as he maintained his lead over both the brothers and won the final general classifications.
He finished 1 minute and 34 seconds ahead of Andy and almost a further minute ahead of the elder brother, Frank.
His all-round efforts during the current season earned him the second place at the UCI World Tour rankings with a total number of 574 points. Evans will face competition from his compatriot, Matthew Goss, who won the Milan-San Remo this year.
Goss is currently at the 17th position in the UCI World Tour rankings with 217 points and is a tough contender for Evans. Jack Bobridge has also been lined up to win the most prestigious award of Cycling Australia.
Bobridge’s UCI ranking does not justify his potential as he is currently at 211th position. However, his record breaking performance in the 4km individual pursuit has made him the third favourite candidate for the award.
A total number of 36 gold medals have been secured by the Australian riders in the current season, along with 23 silver and 18 bronze medals.
Graham Fredericks, CEO of Cycling Australia mentioned, “The Jayco 2011 Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards is a celebration but it's also an opportunity for us to acknowledge those who have made our success possible”.
He further added that, “I congratulate all the cyclists, coaches and staff for their outstanding efforts and thank all our sponsors and fans for their support. We look forward to the momentum continuing in 2012".
With Cadel Evans being the favourite amongst the candidates, it will be interesting to see who manages to win the award that will be announced on November 11, 2011.
