Cadet World Cup 2011 Singapore: First day results – Fencing Update
The Women fencers from Singapore dominated during the first day of the Cadet World Cup (CWC) 2011 which began on February 24 at Republic Polytechnic in Singapore.
Liane Wong of Singapore managed to fight her way in to the finals to go up against her compatriot Lynn Yeo. Liane put in a tremendous performance as she dominated Yeo and took the gold medal.
After winning this amazing bout, Liane said, “This victory means a lot to me after suffering an ankle injury early in the fencing season, so to come back with this win especially with so many strong competitors gives me a lot of confidence for the long season
ahead.”
Lynn Yeo took the silver medal as Lim Qi h*i and Thalia Lee managed to grab the bronze medals.
After observing the brilliant performances of the fencers from Singapore, Nicholas Fang, president of Fencing Singapore said, “The results clearly show the strong development pipeline the team has in place and hopefully put us in good stead as we strive
for medal winning performances in future major games.”
The fencers from Hong Kong put in a tremendous effort in the Men’s sabre and epee events as they took all the medals except for one which went to Wong Tzer Chyuan of Malaysia in the sabre event.
Defending Champion Clive Leu from Singapore had a poor showing as he was unable to qualify for the next rounds having had a dismal performance in the early rounds.
This event will continue until February 27. The event so far has been a tremendous success for fencing in Singapore as not only have they hosted a brilliant event, but their fencers have managed to dominate the proceeding quite comfortably.
About 185 fencers of age 17 and under have taken part in CWC 2011, which means it is now becoming renowned and eye-catching for the regional top class fencers as compared to last year’s participation of 111 fencers. This tournament has now become one of
the top for under-17 fencers to compete in from all over Asia.
