Cadet World Cup Singapore – Second day – Fencing Update
The host women continued their allure over the opposition on the second day of the Cadet World Cup (CWC) on February 25 at Republic Polytechnic.
Singapore’s Women fencers made it to the finals of both the sabre and epee competition. Meili Yeo and Charlotte Li Ling Teo both put in tremendous performances as they managed to beat the fencers from Hong Kong.
Charlotte put in an amazing display of fencing as she faced Hong Kong’s Ho Chau Yu in the semi-final bout. She managed to make a brilliant recovery and fight back to win 11 straight points to take the victory.
Meili had an impressive match-up as she won her semi-final match-up 15-14 to advance into the finals to face Charlotte. However, it was Meili who beat her team-mate Charlotte in the final 15-12 to take the gold medal.
Singapore’s Women epeeists also were a spotlight in the epee final of the night. The final featured the National Cadet 2010 fencers Valerie Fu Fang Tan and Anastasia Karpova. However it was Valerie that managed to put in a brilliant performance and take
the gold in the closing minutes of the match-up.
In the Men’s foil fencing, things did not go well for the Singaporeans as they were unable to match-up with the brilliant performances of their female team.
Singapore’s Youth Olympic Games (YOG) representative Xian s**+ Justin Ong started slowly at the quarter-finals where he met the top seed, Cheung Ka Long. Cheung took early lead on Justin that made it hard for Justin to match up, causing a disappointing failure
at the end.
Justin commented on his weak performance in this event especially after winning the National Cadet Trials last week he said, “I wanted to do well in this cadet world cup as its my second time competing as well as my last chance in this age group. I have
been faring well in other international competitions prior to this competition so its a bit of a surprise i didn’t do as well as I should. However, all credit to my opponent who did very well.”
In the Men’s foil, all the medals had been taken away by the Hong Kong fencers, among whom Pui Ting Thomas Tang came first.
The event was quite a success as the hosts Singapore managed to get the gold in the Women’s epee division with their amazing efforts. The Women’s epeeists did well to prove their dominance in their home tournament and put on a tremendous show for the spectators.
It will be interesting to see how far their winning momentum will carry into the various tournaments scheduled in the fencing calendar. The tournament proved a good platform for Singaporean fencers to show off their skills.
