Cadet World Cup begins February 24 at Singapore – Fencing Update
The 2011 Cadet World Cup (CWC) is going to be held at Republic Polytechnic, Singapore from February 24-27 as nearly 200 of the top young fencers will battle it out for the Cup for four days.
The event will cover sabre, foil and epee as 185 fencers are expected from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and India.
Men’s sabre defending Champion Clive Leu will also be taking part as will Liane Wong and Justin Ong from Singapore.
Singapore has put in a tremendous effort over the past few years to develop top class fencers and the large turnout for the event is a clear indication that the program is working. Fencing Singapore general manager Ryan Quek said, “We had over 400 athletes
competing at the trials, which was almost double the number in 2010. We are aiming to build on the success of last year’s Youth Olympics, as well as the strong performances at the Commonwealth Championships and Asian Games, as we move towards our goal of winning
a medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.”
He further commented, “We have a robust athlete development pipeline in place and events like the Cadet World Cup create great opportunities for our youngsters to test themselves against the best in the region, a crucial factor as we build towards our Olympic
goal.”
Fencing Singapore is continuously being funded and helped out by sponsors and sporting bodies that has proven beneficial for the long-term targets of the fencing sport yet to be achieved.
The President of Fencing Singapore Nicholas Fang expressed his happiness and gratitude on the current increase of funds that were received from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) that facilitated fencing to be a part of Singapore’s “million-dollar club”
of sports for the first time ever.
The President shared that there was an increase of more than 60 percent in the annual budget of Fencing Singapore and have obtained a lump sum amount of more than $1 million, which is the highest ever recorded amount of fund received by them. This amount
shall be made to use for ensuring the most appropriate coach for the athletes to give them a clean direction towards the Olympics 2012 and also helping to improve their youth development programmes.
He expressed his gratitude towards OCBC Bank that has always offered them kind support in arranging quality oriented events, enabling Singapore to attract world top fencers from the region.
