Cadillac Championship: Justin Rose earns his first ever World Golf Championship victory – Golf News
England’s Justin Rose scored a two-under par 70 in the final round of the Cadillac Championship to earn his first ever World Golf Championship victory of the career on Sunday, March 11, 2012.
Rose was placed on the second position while entering the final 18 holes of the event. He carded a total of four birdies against two bogeys that also included the one that came on his final hole.
“It has been a great two weeks, to be honest with you,” said Rose, who tied for the fifth last week at the Honda Classic and finished at 16-under 272 on Sunday.
“I have been very focused on just sort of seeing this whole Florida swing as a body of work and not really trying to put too much focus on any individual tournament,” he added.
He continued, “I kind of knew I was playing well and if I just kept out of my own way for the most part and kept thinking well and doing the right things, I had a feeling something good might happen in these four weeks”.
Bubba Watson, the overnight leader, faltered in the final round of the event and carded a two-over par 74 to grab the second spot on the leaderboard.
On the par-four 18th, he had the chance of forcing the game into playoffs with an eight-foot birdie putt. However, he missed it with an inch to give away his 54-hole lead to the Englishman.
“That’s the worst I’ve hit the ball all year,” he admitted.
The turning point of Rose taking the lead came when Watson made three consecutive bogeys, starting from the par-four third.
He found the fairways for the first time in the round on the 10th hole, which speaks of his poor performance in the round.
Moreover, he only managed to find the fairways four times in total throughout his final round at Doral Golf Resort & Spa.
The world number one, Rory McIlroy, had a spectacular round of five-under par 67 to surge to the third spot on the leaderboard, two shots behind Rose.
Tiger Woods, who was expected to make another good run in the final round as he did in Honda Classic, withdrew from the event after suffering Achilles tendon injury while teeing off at the 12th hole.
