Question:

Caffeine is a flavouring? (Coca Cola drink)?

It basically states on a can of Coke that caffeine is a flavouring. As far as I know, caffeine is just a psychoactive substance that gives you more energy and can be addictive. Does it have a taste at all? Are Coca Cola company trying to make it look like it's just there for the flavour rather than being the key ingredient responsible for its popularity? And on a more general note, should products that contain caffeine cointain a warning that caffeine in high doses can be harmful and addictive?

  1. iv never heard of it being a flavouring

lets bring trading standards to them .. and get them shut down, yeah!!

  2. Caffeine has no flavour. What you read was the list of ingredients.

Interesting point though: caffeine acts as a natural pesticide produced by the plant itself.

Moderate consumption of caffeine is not harmful. Given enough time, the body will remove it through decaffeination. Humans have consumed caffeine for a very long time, and since we are much larger than insects, we can tolerate the effects of caffeine.

Aside from complications with medicine or gross overconsumption of caffeine, there should be no grave danger of said substance, granted the risk of not being able to completely wake up without it in the mornings.

  3. Haven't you ever tried the caffeine free stuff? Yuck!

  4. It is not stated that it is a flavoring. It is stated as an ingredient, because it is part of the substance that makes up the product. Caffeine itself DOES have a flavor, although perhaps a caffeine expert could explain exactly what caffeine alone tastes like, because I don't know. Try a soda with caffeine and then a caffeine-free soda, and you will understand. It is a drug and psychoactive "upper" but it also adds a little more to the product. It is illegal to display false ingredients on a product, and saying anywhere "caffeine flavoring" would be wrong. Yes it has flavor, no it is not "flavoring." You either read it wrong or just don't understand the label.

  5. Caffeine is listed as an ingredient, not as a flavoring.

I would have to see a picture to believe otherwise!
