  1. Caffeine contributes to menstrual problems by making one nervous and the oils in the coffee may irritate the intestinal lining . Lifestyle changes including exercise, stress reduction and sodium and caffeine restriction have a positive impacts on PMS symptoms.  Caffeine interferes with the absorption of minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. During their period, women often lose more iron through blood loss than they are able to recover through diet  and caffeine increases this problem by reducing iron availability up to 50%. So there are more reasons than just cramping to avoid caffeine especially during this time.

Some people found that with taking calcium they suffer less pain from cramps that those who do not. Calcium is a calming mineral. Magnesium is important, too, because it helps your body absorb calcium more efficiently.  You can increase your calcium and magnesium intake before and during your period.

If you can't live without coffee, you can try substituting a non-caffeinated, alkaline herbal coffee that brews and tastes just like coffee.

    Hope this helps.  :-)
