Caffreys Sprint Trophy heats set up hot final next Monday at Nottingham
There were two heats at Nottingham last night to set the stage for next week’s Caffreys Sprint Trophy. The sprints were run over 305m, and the top three greyhounds from each race qualified for Monday’s final.
Slick Citi, the 4-11 race favourite, won the first sprint heat by 5 ¾ lengths in a time of 17.89 seconds over Port West. Slick Citi led from the traps as he impressed the crowd with his incredible time. West ran well, but was no match for Citi, running the 305m in a time of 18.35.
The third qualifier for the final in heat one was Daisyfield Soots, who finished with a time of 18.43, a length behind West. Soots lost ground early and had to fight to stay ahead of fourth place finisher Toems Rocket.
Fingerfudge Fred and Non Negotiable couldn’t negotiate a spot in the final as they finished in fifth and sixth respectively.
The second hear saw the other race favourite also win in less than 18 seconds. Rotar Wing, at 1-4, took a little longer to take the lead than Citi did, but still managed to win over Pineapple Tommy by 1 ½ lengths with a time of 17.96.
Salacres Meako took third place as he finished 2 ½ lengths behind Tommy. Superstar Max wasn’t very super in this short distance as he finished in fourth place, and failed to qualify for the final. Charleys Amy took the fifth and last place. Slick Ace was scheduled to start from the second trap, but was pulled from the race and not replaced.
It will be an exciting final next week as Slick Citi and Rotar Wing will go head-to-head.
Other races of note at Nottingham Monday night were the Worthington Gents Standard and the Caffreys Ladies Standard.
Little Gaffer took the Gents Standard after taking the lead coming out of the second bend. Munster Champ was quickest from the traps, but the 10-1 longshot wasn’t able to keep up the pace, and finished second, 2 ¼ lengths behind Gaffer. Hondo Lad, at 12-1, raced well and took third place.
Trainer, Pat Rosney, was hopeful that one of his two dogs would win the Gents Standard, but before the race he was probably more inclined to believe it would be 1-2 race favourite, Windy Millar, not 3-1 Gaffer. Millar finished a disappointing fourth after losing ground early and again on the second bend,.
Markland Marvel finished in fifth place and Vigorous Willie in sixth.
In the Ladies Standard, Rock It Diva rocked the other racers in a close finish. Diva took first by a neck over Fabulous Quest, who only finished a shoulder ahead of third place, Fabulous Path. Ucangobut was close to finishing in the top three, but couldn’t quite make it as she lost to Path by a head. Rosiegoneagain, the 2-1 race favourite, ended up in fifth, and Game Destiny was last.
