Cagla Buyukakcay cripples Nidhi Chilumula to enter round two – Royal Indian Open 2012
Turkish contender, Cagla Buyukakcay, devastated the local qualifier, Nidhi Chilumula, with a breadstick at the Royal Indian Open 2012 on Tuesday. She juggled up a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the 18-year-old to power into the round of 16 at this outdoor hard
court tournament taking place in Pune, India.
The Turk displayed brilliant tennis to outclass Chilumula in their first encounter. After recording the victory in one hour and 10 minutes, Buyukakcay took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the local teenager and powered into the second round
at the Balewadi Sports Complex.
Buyukakcay stormed into this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Challenger series event taking place from 5th to 11th November. She reeled off opening four games through angled shots before Chilumula could hold on. The Turk held her composure
and bagged the following serves with poise, subsequently sealing the opener by winning six games to two. She dusted away both breakpoints she faced and converted two out of three break chances to her advantage.
Ranked 186th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Buyukakcay kept momentum rolling in the following set. She winded up the opening three games before the Indian could come on the score sheet. The higher ranked challenger unleashed her skills again and
after pocketing the last three games, she clinched the set with a breadstick. She warded off one out of two breakpoints she came across and availed four out of five break chances to earn the fame.
Overall, the 23-year-old produced an amazing first serve share of 77 per cent as compared to her rival’s 50 per cent and amazingly clinched 22 out of 30 points on it. She also spilled fewer errors and ended the match with 62 points.
Up next for Buyukakcay is eighth seed Tamarine Tanasugarn who battled past Taiwan’s Chin-Wei Chan in a three-set luscious battle to set up this meeting.
The former Top 10, Andrea Petkovic from German, also stole the show later that day. She triumphed over the Georgian challenger, Sofia Shapatava, in straight sets to progress. The sixth seed dropped her serve four times but cashed five out of 14 break chances
to formulate a 7-6(4), 7-5 success.
