Cagla Buyukakcay eases past Nina Zander into second round – OrtoLaakarit Open 2011
Turkish Cagla Buyukakcay eased past against her German contestant, Nina Zander, in the first round of 2011 OrtoLaakarit Open contested in Helsinki, Finland. It was the first encounter between the two stylish players that lasted for an hour and 34 minutes and finished with a final score of 6-1, 7-6(4).
Sizeable crowd had gathered to witness this encounter that was completely dominated by the superior ranked Turkish that outclassed her opponent in all parts of the game. Although the second set did entered a tie-breaker but it was due to some unforced errors that deprived the Turkish to win any breakpoints.
First set was completely dominated by the inform Turk that cruised in every department of the game. She started the set in style having smashed three classy drop shots in the first game. It completely dismantled her opponent that was no way near her best form.
Dismal run of form lately for the German was reflected in this match as well. She looked completely rusty and out of touch. She lost first five games of the set that included two successful breakpoints for her opponent.
German struck two double-faults and could only convert 47% and 20% of her first and second serves in her favour. These stats clearly show that she had very tough time at the pitch whilst her opponent was sailing past her, winning games one after another.
Buyukakcay won another break in the last game of the set to seal the first set win in an emphatic fashion. Zander was completely down and out and now she was trailing one set down that tripled her misery.
Turkish started the third set but surprisingly it was the German that took the first game by breaking her opponent’s serve but Zander couldn’t claim that lead for long as her rival broke back in the second game to push score to 1-1.
Both players held on to their serves in the next four games and the score card ticked to 4-4. Crowd saw some scintillating show as both players traded breaks in the next four games and enforced a tie-breaker. It was all about handling pressure and keeping yourself calm and composed.
Turkish held her first two serves and broke in the third to take lead of 3 points. She never provided any opportunity to her opponent to have any sort of come back as she clinched the second set and placed a berth in the second round draws of the tournament.
