Cagla Buyukakcay tumbles Pemra Ozgen to enter round two – Ankara Cup 2012
In an all Turks affair, Cagla Buyukakcay stomped over her wild card compatriot Pemra Ozgen in straight sets at the Ankara Cup 2012 on Monday. She joggled up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against her fellow citizen to progress into the second round at this indoor hard
court tournament taking place in Ankara, Turkey.
Seeded eighth in this event, Buyukakcay dominated throughout the battle, ultimately pulling out the victory in their seventh encounter. The contestants last met each other at the Istanbul ITF event two months ago and after bagging this match, Buyukakcay
extended her lead in the head-to-head series by 5-2 against the 26-year-old.
Buyukakcay comfortably entered the Ankara Tennis Club. She smoothly swiped her entire serves until Ozgen could hold on. The seed then got the breakthrough in the fourth game and eventually sealed the opener by winning six games to three. She warded off the
only breakpoint she faced and converted two out of five break opportunities to her advantage.
Ranked 174th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Buyukakcay lifted her game in the following set. She suffered the first blow in the opening game fell at 0-1. Apart from recovering in the very next game, the Serb lost her
edge again and fell at 1-2. However, Buyukakcay unveiled flurry of groundstrokes and reeled off five games in a row. She failed to block both breakpoints she faced but availed half of the eight break chances, eventually clicking the decider with a 6-2 win.
Up next for Buyukakcay is the winner of the match between the Croatian qualifier, Ana Savic, and the local wild card entrant, Basak Eraydin.
The Russian contestant, Margarita Gasparyan, also stole the show later that day. She battled past her compatriot, Valeria Solovieva, in a three-set nail-biter to progress.
Gasparyan bagged the opening set after prevailing in the tie-breaker. However, she failed to keep her momentum and after losing her serve towards the end, the winning Russian equalised the set scores. Gasparyan unveiled her true form in the deciding set
and after reeling off four games in a row, she clinched the match with a 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2 score line.
