Massimo Cellino believes that the team’s disappointing end to the season calls for new faces; insists he will change half the squad for the next season.
Massimo Cellino has stated that he has had enough of the lethargic attitude of the players towards the end of the season, and insists that he will change half of the squad in preparation for their next campaign.
The Rossoblu finished the season at the 15th spot in the Serie A points table, and were threatened with relegation following their failure to pick-up points towards the end of the season.
Cellino stated that it was disappointing to see the lack of enthusiasm in the Cagliari ranks in the last phase of their campaign, and insisted that he felt as if the will to win matches was no longer there for the team after achieving 40 points.
The Islanders President pointed out that three years ago they managed to take just five points from their last five matches, and stated that it was even more frustrating for him to see the trend repeat itself in their last season.
While talking to Radio 2, the Italian businessman stated:
“There was no competitiveness from the players. It seems as if the championship ended when we reached 40 points… Three years ago we picked up five points from the last five games. Last year three points from the final eight and we only survived in the last
instance this time.”
Massimo Cellino stated that he has acted with patience, but now it is unbearable for him to see his team slip closer to the relegation zone.
The Cagliari patron believes that the principal problem is the lazy mentality that is plaguing the club, and insisted that he will change half of the team in order to introduce a fresh perspective into the Islanders.
“I’ve had enough. I’m going to change half of the team because I do not like the mentality that there is right now.” He added.
Just seven points separated Cagliari from Lecce, the first team in the red zone, at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.
