Cai Yun, Fu Haifeng fetch gold medal in Men’s Doubles event of 2012 London Olympics
China’s prime Men’s Doubles team Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng proved their supremacy over Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen to secure the gold medal in London Olympics on Sunday, August 5, 2012.
This battle was staged at Wembley Arena and was resolved in just two games with final result of 21-16 and 21-15.
This encounter was ninth meeting between both pairs and the Chinese duo sealed their seventh victory by performing exceedingly well in both games.
World Number two duo Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng, who was also top seeded team, played impeccable badminton throughout this tussle whereas the Danish campaigners could not revive their lost form and claimed second spot on victory stand.
The twosome of Mathias and Carsten got off track straight away in the opening game as they lost first set with a notable deficit of five points.
First sign of trouble came when they dropped few back-to-back valuable points and could not make amends in next couple of rallies.
Meanwhile, Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng made the best out of this opportunity and established an unassailable lead. They carried this rhythm all the way to mid-game break and finished first half with a favourable margin of 11.
After the interval, they lost focus for short span of time which allowed their challengers to step forward in third quarter of the set but then couple of consecutive rallies helped the Chinese to reinstate their dominance.
They maintained the upper hand until game point situation and bagged first set with a winning score of 21-16.
Things were not much different in following game as the Danish pair again failed to come out of their superior competitor’s influence.
They played with a defensive approach and did not create challenge for the opposing team at any stage of this crucial set.
On the other hand, Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng capitalised their first set win to get into the right momentum immediately in the beginning of the second game. They kept proceeding at top gear and cruised to victory with convincing figure of 21-15.
With their splendid success, China performed a clean sweep by clinching all of five gold medals in London Games.
