Cain Velasquez back on win track and knocks out UFC debutant Antonio Silva in 1st round – UFC News
Cain Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight champion, made a successful comeback after losing his title in the last bout to Junior Dos Santos by grabbing an impressive knockout win over Antonio Silva, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, in the first
round of the bout held on May 26, 2012.
The duo co-headlined the ‘UFC 146: Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir’ pay-per-view and the octagon for the showdown was set up at MGM Grand Garden Arena situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
The event was headlined by the epic clash between Frank Mir and Junior Dos Santos. Cain, a former UFC champion, who lost his gold to Santos, has now again grabbed media’s attention after his emphatic and quite intimidating performance.
Cain, 29, was entering in his 11th mixed martial bout and boasted nine wins. The American proud is a knockout specialist and has collected eight of his total wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
His Saturday night opponent, Antonio, 32, was entering in his first ever UFC bout and was coming after enjoying a successful reign over Strikeforce’s heavyweight division.
The Brazilian Silva was entering in his 20th mixed martial art bout and boasted 16 wins. Also known as ‘Bigfoot’ or ‘Pezao’, Silva also relies heavily on the knockout ability and has pinned 11 of his opponents by sheer knockout.
Cain really did not consider Antonio as a big, confident or lethal opponent, the reason why in the initial seconds of the very first round he received a thunderous kick from Silva.
Unfortunately, Velasquez successfully defended himself from that kick in fact grabbed his leg and took Silva down on the floor. It was that very moment when Cain leashed his attack and mercilessly pounded and battered Silva’s face with his jabs and elbows.
As a result of the ironed elbow strikes, Antonio received a big cut on the root of his nose. Blood started to gush out of it and the bout referee intervened eventually halting the bout so as to examine Silva.
After Silva’s and the bout-doctor’s nod, the bout continued but not for long since Cain now had Silva’s weakness just in front of his eyes. Velasquez kicked off his attack with a combination of right-left jabs.
The force of the attack was so severe that Silva lost his ground and fell on the octagon floor with blood all over his face. The referee immediately called off the bout and announced Cain as the winner.
After the impressive win, Cain stated, “This is definitely a step in the right direction. Just to know what you did in the past and to get over that and take a step in the right direction ... it’s great.”
Cain is now being dubbed in the media as the future challenger for Junior Dos Santos as he still has not demanded a rematch after losing the title last year to Santos, the aspect that makes the probability of the duo colliding with each other stronger.
