Cain Velasquez takes on debutant Antonio Silva in an attempt to make winning comeback – UFC News
Cain Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight champion, will try to make a comeback on the win track by taking on UFC debutant, Antonio Silva, the former Strikeforce heavyweight title semi-finalist, in a three-round bout which will be held on UFC 146 on May
26, 2012.
The above duo will co-headline the pay-per-view which will be televised live from MGM Grand Garden Arena situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The fight card is being headlined by the epic title clash between Junior Dos Santos and Frank Mir.
This is the first time that Cain is entering the octagon after losing his gold to Junior Dos Santos. Velasquez lost his title on November 12, 2011 at UFC on Fox pay-per-view and since then has remained outside the octagon.
The 29-year-old American belligerent has been in a total 10 mixed martial art bouts and boasts nine wins. The former champion is a lethal knockout specialist and has nailed eight of his opponents by jaw-breaking knockout jabs.
Cain and Antonio recently met at the pre-bout press conference and shared their thoughts about the bout. Antonio, 32, is a Brazilian mixed martial artist who is moving up in the UFC after brawling in the Strikeforce brand of UFC.
Silva, also known as ‘Pezao’, has been in a total 19 bouts and emerged victorious in 16. Antonio is also a knockout specialist and has pinned 11 of his opponent by knockout, three by submission and just two by decision.
During the media interaction, Silva thanked UFC and its management for putting him against a former champion in his very first UFC bout. Silva stated, “It’s a great opportunity that the UFC is giving me for my first fight in the UFC against one of the top
fighters in the world, and it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m the underdog in this fight, and it takes a lot of responsibility off my back, so I feel very comfortable with that.”
Cain, on the other hand, praised Silva for his talent and commented, “I think he’s one of the best heavyweights out there. Antonio is perfectly capable of winning, and he is probably in the best shape of his career. Most importantly, he always brings it,
no matter who is on the other side of the octagon.”
Antonio might be in some trouble since he is taking on a former UFC champion but for Cain the bout is a golden chance and he should capitalise it in making a return to the win track. The odds are somewhat in favour of Cain since he has collided with men
who were far more powerful than those taken on by Antonio in his career.
