Caio Zampieri loses to Louk Sorensen in the second round of the Seguros Bolivar Open
26-year-old Irish, Louk Sorensen won the tough battle against his Brazilian opponent, Caio Zampieri, in the second round of the Seguros Bolivar Open at San Jose, Costa Rica on Thursday evening. Sorensen fought for one hour and
fifty one minutes before concluding the three-set victory at 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3, to register his first win of the running year.
The Irish had a poor start to the contest, dropping the opening set early, but he made a tremendous comeback into the game, reeling off the following two sets to win the contest. His win ensures him berth in the quarter-final round
of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event at San Jose.
Zampieri took off the contest in an aggression fashion but lost steam in the later parts of the game, eventually suffering a defeat. He took 70 per cent of the first serve points in the match and committed three double faults in
process. His opponent bestowed him with seven break chances but he converted just two of them, while being broken three times in the match.
An aggressive start from the Brazilian put Sorensen under immense pressure and he started spilling out some costly unforced errors, including three double faults. One serve break from Zampieri in the first set put him in a commanding
lead of 5-3, serving for the match. The Brazilian clinched the first set comprehensively at 6-3 to lead the contest 1-0.
Sorensen shifted his gears in the second set to bounce back strongly with his powerful serve. The Irish delivered 67 per cent of his first serve on target and secured 14 out of 18 points on it. The two opponents exchanged a serve
break to take the scores to 4-4 and it appeared as if the set is heading towards a tie breaker. The Irish proved it wrong by stinging a crucial serve break in the ninth game to serve for the set at 5-4. Sorensen levelled the match with one set a piece after
closing the second set at 6-4.
The Irish carried his winning momentum to the decisive third set and uplifted his first serve percentage to an impressive 72, bagging 20 of 29 total serve points in the set. Sorensen crafted two break opportunities and availed
one of them to edge past over his opponent in the third set. The contest fell to the Irish’s name at 6-3 as Zampieri thumped a forehand into the net, giving a pass to Sorensen to advance to the quarter-final of the Seguros Bolivar Open.
Sorensen will square off against the winner of the match between Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador and the Columbian, Carlos Salamanca in the quarter-final round.
