Cairns vs Townsville?

Question

Hi, I am thinking of moving to North Queensland, this is mainly due to the fact that I hate cold weather (I'm from the deep south of NZ) and thrive in the heat, and the thought of a place that is warm-hot all year round is just awsome! I haven't been to either of these cities yet, but was just wondering if anyone who has been to either or both could give me some view points, opinions, disadvantages/advantages of either one. Like to know info on scenery, local people, jobs, climate, and any other random facts you can think of that would help me get an idea. Also reasons why you think one is better than the other. I don't need anyone telling me to move to a capital city instead either, as I don't want big city life. Thanks!

deffinalty go to Cairns i have been there 3 times for a holiday and love it andhave already bought and invesment there for my retirement i absoloutly love it.

The weather is beautiful, reef is around the corner and your close to beautiful places such as, Port Douglas, Mossman and Cape tribultion witch are all beautiful.

I want to move to Cairns, i've been there twice on holiday, and it has the usual problems that coastal towns have like crime and vagrancy but the weather is sure fine and the pace is slow and easy. And the reef is right at your doorstep, if your a diver it is paradise. And just the sounds of the tropics and the native animals ie crocodiles and canetoads just makes it a really unique place to live I think. I often imagine myself in an old queenslander home with a hammock out the back and a dog by my side. That's my dream.

Should also consider range of other smaller cities/towns on Queenland coast.

And why not Darwin (Northern Territory), or Broome (NW Australia) which are both booming towns still with a reputedly "frontier" feel of sorts.
