Caitlin McClatchey wins Women’s 200m freestyle semi-final – British Gas Swimming Championships
Caitlin McClatchey of Loughborough University won the semi-final of Women’s 200m freestyle on day three of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Monday, March 5.
The British Championships serve as a selection trial for their national stars, who want to confirm their berths to the 2012 London Olympics Games.
The 26-year-old McClatchey showered her ruthless efforts in the four-lap freestyle event and earned the finest qualification spot in the final round with an effort of 1 minute and 57.45 seconds.
She was followed by Rebecca Turner of Co Sheffield, who stayed 0.97 seconds slower from her former finisher and transpired on the finishing end for second position by posting 1 minute and 58.42 seconds. Turner remained 0.28 seconds ahead of her closest swimmer
and team-member, Eleanor Faulkner, who reached the final round as third best swimmer with an effort of 1 minute and 58.70 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 200m butterfly semi-final, where Stockport Mo’s Michael Rock proved his eligibility for the top qualification spot by clocking a time of 1 minute and 56.45 seconds. The 24-year-old Rock stayed almost half body length ahead of Loughborough
University’s Roberto Pavoni, who settled on the finishing blockade as second position holder by submitting 1 minute and 57.63 seconds.
Pavoni was trailed by his teammate, Joseph Roebuck, who was just 0.04 seconds slower and hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 57.67 seconds for third position.
In the meantime, Garioch’s Hannah Miley finished first in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM). The 22-year-old Miley faced tough competition from her competitors throughout the event, but with her promising efforts, she ended first in a time of 2 minutes
and 12.63 seconds.
She was followed by Aimee Willmott of Middlesbrough, who remained only 0.10 seconds slower from Miley and finished second with an effort of 2 minutes and 12.73 seconds. Siobhan-Marie O'Connor of Bath University occupied third qualifying position of the event
as she clocked 2 minutes and 13.12 seconds.
Furthermore, these competitors will race each other in the playoffs of their respective events where the gold medallists will confirm their spots in British team to the 2012 Games.
