Caja Laboral, Olympiacos and SLUC Nancy win – Euroleague Group A second week Review – Part 1
During the second week of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, three games took place in Group A. Here is a brief review of the games:
Caja Laboral 81 - Bennet Cantu 69
Mirza Teletovic scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, as Caja Laboral remained undefeated in Group A with an 81-69 victory over Bennet Cantu on October 26, 2011 at in Vitoria, Spain. With this victory, Laboral
moved up to 2-0 to take sole possession of first place in their group.
Milko Bjelica chipped in 17 points on 2 for 3 shooting from three-point range while Thomas Huertel ended with 11 points and four rebounds in the victory. Kevin Seraphin racked up 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Caja.
Vladimir Micov led Cantu with 14 points, five assists and four rebounds while Marko Scekic contributed 13 points in the loss. Giorgi Shermadini scored 11 points on 5 for 7 shooting from free throw line and pulled down five rebounds
for Cantu.
In a tightly contested opening period, Caja barely managed to take a one point lead, 26-25, in the last minute of the quarter. Marko Scekic however immediately made a pair of free throws to put the visiting team ahead by 27-26
after 10 minutes.
Caja made early inroads in the second quarter and went ahead by 40-33 with five minutes to go in the first half of the game. However, Bennet attacked them with seven consecutive points of their own and tied the scores at 40. Thomas
Huertel scored a layup to make it 42-40 but Giorgi Shermadini answered with a pair of free throws and levelled the score again. The deadlock continued and the teams headed to the locker room with the scores locked at 44.
The trend continued in the third quarter, and both teams were level at 59 in the last minute of the frame, before a pair of free throws by Nemanja Bjelica put Laboral ahead by 61-59.
Laboral stretched their lead to six points early in the quarter and then turned the screws on the Bantu frontline, limiting them to only 10 points, for a 81-69 win .
Olympiacos 81 - Fenerbahce Ulker 74
Playing at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece, hosts Olympiacos improved to 1-1 in Group A with an impressive 81-74 victory over Fenerbahce Ulker. It was second straight loss for Ulker, which is now the only winless
team in the group.
Vassilis Spanoulis led Olympiacos with 22 points on a perfect 8 for 8 shooting from free throw line and dished out seven assists. Georgios Printezis added 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Martynas Gecevicius had 13 points.
Kyle Hines registered 10 points for the Reds.
