  1. Go a head and get the 3 tier.  You will not be happy if you don't.  If people would like to take some cake home.....let them.

  2. we bought a beautiful cake stand and used cupcakes that were frosted like a cake they are called cupcake cakes it looks bigger then it is we had 8 tiers for for 100 people and it only cost $200 for the stand topper cake and fountain

  3. you can either give cake to people to take home or have a fake tier ... that way you can get exactly what you want still and nothing will go to waste, will also save you a bit of money and nobody will notice

  4. It's common to have the extra tier to freeze and eat on your anniversary, although I've always found them kinda gross after that long and would rather just get a fresh one from the same place when the time comes.

Of course you can always get some cute boxes and give away cake slices as the favor for people to take home.

You can also have the baker make you a faux teir.  It's when the top extra layers are made out of cheap material like styrofoam and then decorated just like the ones made from real cake.  Nobody can ever tell the difference and you get the look without the waste.  Whether or not it's cheaper will really depend on your baker.  Some will charge you the same as if you had cake, others not since the cakes are priced by the slice and not necessarily the labor.

  5. Hi there.  If a 3 tier cake is what you want, then a 3 tier cake is what you should have.  This could actually open a door for you to cut costs.  You could turn your wedding favors into really cute take home cake boxes.  That way you will save some money, have your 3 tier cake, and have a fabulous wedding favor.

  6. You can still have a 3 tier cake. Just make the size of the tiers smaller.

  7. just do smaller layers a 6" 8" and 10" serves 50 or if you want to save the top you could make one tier bigger. talk to your bakery if you want a 3 tier cake that serves 50 they should be able to take care of it for you.

  8. Typically the bride and groom keep the top teir for thier 1 year anniversery, so yea...

  9. Do a three tier but have the top tier be pretty small. After all if they don`t cut into that one the tradition is to freeze it and have it with your husband on your first anniversary.

If there is a lot left over you can of course have it sliced up and put into little boxes to take home.

Don`t stress. I had a three tier cake that was supposed to feed 60. I had 75 guests and somehow we still had some left over in addition to the top tier -- but not an excessive amount.

  10. Why not have a three-tiered cake and use the bottom tier/bottom two tiers for dessert?  I had a two-tiered cheese cake for my wedding cake; we cut the cake early in the reception and sent it around to the back, and we used the bottom tier for dessert, in addition to other cakes that we had bought.  We took the top tier on our honeymoon.

  11. You should ask whoever is making your cake how many servings each tier will produce.  We told the bakery that is making our cake that we were expecting 50 people and they said we'd need a 4-tier cake.  The size of our 4 tiers is 5", 7", 10", and 12" and it's supposed to feed about 60 people.  They said a 3-tier cake without the bottom layer would only feed 35 people.

  12. Many cake companies will make one of the layers fake. It will be decorated just like the other two, but will not be edible. This way you are getting the grandness of the 3 tier, without the exspense. (although obviously you will still have to pay for the decorating...but it will still be cheaper)

  13. I had a four tier cake & only had 85 people.  But it was what I wanted for the look so I splurged a little.

I would recommend allowing guests to take cake home.  I picked up square styrofoam take out boxes from Costco.  Then I printed stickers (Avery labels from Office Depot) that had "Sweet Dreams" & our monogram & stuck to the boxes.  Let your caterer know ahead of time that you want the extra cake (minus the top tier if you're saving that for your 1st anniversary) to be cut up & set up for departing guests.  Make sure the cake is set near the exit so the guests know.

ADD: I priced having a fake tier & it was barely any cheaper.  The cake is the cheapest part of the cake - all the cost is in the decorations!  Don't bother with a fake tier.

  14. There are a few options there certainly. If you're looking for 3 tiers because of the height factor, one other option is a cupcake tower/cake combo. There are a variety of stands out there to accommodate either square or round. You then have your 6 inch  cutting/photo op cake on top and the bottom 2 or 3 tiers (if you look for cupcake tower pictures online you will see the variations on this and they are quite elegant, plus accommodating smaller guest sizes and still 'looking large') have the cupcakes around them.

The other option is one fake tier. (This is a dummy cake, made of styrofoam and decorated the same as the rest of the real cake). Talk to a few cake decorators in your area to get some prices quotes and ideas.  If your main concern is the grandeur of a 3 tiered cake and not having cake waste at the end of the day, then this is a good and also a popular option. It's done quite frequently for people who still want that big tiered wedding cake and don't have 200 guests. Talk to your decorator. They are up to speed on these things.

Then the third option that someone mentioned about combining it into either the dessert or favours for people to take home.

And of course the fourth option, going with 2 tiers, which still look very elegant (also a good idea, which you've probably already done, is to look at some professional wedding cake decorator websites at their galleries to open up possibilities for yourselves (or get a free membership at a site like cakecentral.com and look through the enormous gallery of wedding cake photos submitted by the many talented professional and amateur decorators for inspiration!)

    Good luck and congrats

  15. I say get what you want and take the rest home with you, you will probably eat it the next morning anyway!  (as I did with the top "1st year layer" -- like it's really gonna keep!)

  16. get one fake tier of styrofoam for your cake...your baker will know how.
