Cal Crutchlow prefers Rossi than Rooney, to compete – MotoGP news
If, the only British rider in premier class MotoGP had the opportunity to run against Rooney or Rossi, Cal Crutchlow would prefer the Italian MotoGP celebrity.
The option might seem to be a bit unrealistic, but Crutchlow feels it the opposite way.
“I played (soccer) for years,” the 25-year-old Cal Crutchlow, Yamaha Tech3 rider shared his thoughts with media after a tour of the new pit and paddock complex at Silverstone, which hosts the AirAsia British Grand Prix of the 2011 MotoGP season on 12 June.
Crutchlow has played for Coventry (City) and Northampton (Town). The Brit has also gave some trials with (Aston) Villa and then returned to Coventry and continued to play as in reserve for youth team.
He had a clear sight that he could propel his carrier as professional in football some time, but having a father from racing field he was sure to have a great passion for motorcycles.
Crutchlow instantly shifted into Daredevil well-known sport for thrilling high-speeds.
“I kept dislocating my knee at the time playing football and I was thinking 'Oh, this is hurting every time',” Crutchlow shared. “Little did I know it was going to be even worse in motorbikes. But I enjoy motorcycles more; it's as simple as that.”
“I can still play football. I just tend not to in case I get injured. I'd prefer to be up against Rossi than Rooney. But that's only because of what I know now. But I enjoy both.”
Unlike most riders who move up from a basic category of 125cc and then up to Moto2 class, Cal Crutchlow has shifted directly to MotoGP premier class, form a season run in World Superbikes after claiming the title for World Supersport championship of 2009.
Crutchlow will debut in MotoGP in the upcoming season with Monster Yamaha Tech3 at the first race of the season at Qatar, March 20.
“The difference between riding a MotoGP bike and a Superbike is like driving a Ford Focus down the street and then jumping in a Formula One car and driving down the same street,” he said. “Everything is just unbelievable. If you are born and bred on them,
the 125s and 250s, and then you go into MotoGP it's a lot easier than going from production-based Superbikes.”
“In all honesty, I think that's why British guys have struggled in the past.”
Barry Sheene (late) was the last Brit to win a title in the grand prix class with his 500cc Suzuki in 1977.
“When Carl did go to MotoGP, it never worked out for him. He came straight back and was still 'Mr Superbike',” said the Coventry-born racer.
“People have the expectation that British riders are only Superbike riders, which is disappointing. It really is. We always get pushed towards Superbike and that's where the rides become available for us. But I'm sure everyone would rather be racing grand
prix.”
Crutchlow had the entry after Ben Spies moved up to the Factory Yamaha team, to cover up the empty seat of Rossi, who moved to Ducati. He feels that it will be tough to cope up as Spies performed with Tech3.
“He's just a one-off, it's as simple as that. It's a fantastic job he's done,” he declared. “I am looking forward to the challenge though.
“At circuits I know, I expect half-decent results. But at other circuits, I've got to learn them and just get through them and take that way and improve on it and come back the next year and hopefully be a lot better.”
