Cal Maritime Academy clinches lead on Day 2 of 2012 Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup
Local sailing team, Cal Maritime Academy grabbed an early lead in the 2012 Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup’s Cal Maritime Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta. The event was hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club in San Pedro, California where the second day proceedings
finished with Cal Maritime Academy on top of the fleet with 13 points after six races.
The racing on Day 2 of the regatta commenced under ideal wind conditions as the breeze was quite cooperative and allowed full sail. The fleet set sail in three scheduled races just like Day 1. Cal Maritime Academy sailing team sailed according to the expectations
on the first day and repeated their form on Day 2 to hit the leading podium place among the fleet members.
Cal Maritime Academy team sailed brilliantly in the first two races as they finished on top of the fleet. However, they slipped down to fourth position in the third race of Day 2 but still, with impressive scores on both days they managed to grab the first
podium.
CSU Channel Islands ended the second day proceedings on the second finish with 21 points in six races. They could clinch only one race, the sixth one, to reach the second spot.
Meanwhile USC made their way on third spot with just one point difference from the second placed CSU Channel Islands at 22 points. They also hit only one bullet on the second day of the regatta.
Speaking to the local media at the end of Day 2, USC skipper Max Hutcheson said about the regatta leader, “They're sailing really well and they're really fast. We've had a few miscues… mostly tactics and one really bad tack, but today everything was clean,
except for that start.”
Cal Maritime Academy’s sailing team began their regatta proceedings with a classy bullet in the first race. After that they could not maintain their position and finished on fifth place in the second race. The sailors bounced back into the event and clinched
three consecutive bullets to finish on top.
CSU Channel Islands remained convincing throughout the first day with a couple of top positions including a bullet. However, on second day, they tumbled down a bit but were able to finish on Number 2 position. The USC team had a slow start but some top finishes
saved them from dropping down to lower podiums.
