I'm goning to attend UCLA this fall. I've applied FAFSA and cal grant(all have been processed). The school COA is $23013. the total of my pell grant,scholarship,work-study, and loans shown on school financial aid website has already meet the COA. I wonder if I can stiil get cal grant B which has the amount of $8000. If not, Can I decline loans and work-study in order to be able to get cal grant B. Free money is obviously much better than loans and work-study.

  1. Your school, by law, is required to give you the best money first: gift aid/grants, scholarships, work-study and then loans.  You may decline your work-study or loans to receive all or part of your Cal-Grant or any grant.  However, you should talk to your campus before making that decision final.  Your award package may be put together the way it is for a reason that you are not privy to.

  2. I was wondering about that too, cuz Cal Grant B gives alot more money so why dont they give us the one with more money.  I think they do it depending on the school you go to.  Since youre going to UCLA (UCSD woot) and UC's are cheaper, the government gives them less money to distribute to their students and so we get less money.  But if we were to go to say USC, we would be able to get Cal Grant B cuz USC would get more money from the gov cuz USC is a more expensive school to attend.
