  1. As a result of Samsung’s A650 Series LCD TVs being fairly new the number of reputable and worthwhile sources from which to gather information remains limited. Your best bet is to start with the optimum settings obtained by CNET during their LN52A650 review combined with the results from the hifinet review and info from the related AVS Forum discussion listed below. I’ve taken the opportunity to assemble information from those three sources to derive the ‘recommended’ settings you see below, which should help you to get your display in the ballpark. Beyond that you will really need to rent or purchase one of the popular display optimization (aka “calibration”) discs listed below in order to properly and accurately optimize your display’s settings.

    Picture Menu

       • Mode: Movie

       • Backlight: 3 - 5

       • Contrast: 92 - 93

       • Brightness: 44 - 45

       • Sharpness: 0 - 17

       • Color: 50 - 53

       • Tint (G/R): G50/R50 - G55/R45

    Detailed Settings Submenu

       • Black Adjust: Off

       • Dynamic Contrast: Off

       • Gamma: -1 (2.6) to +3 (2.2)

       • Color Space: Auto

       • Flesh Tone: 0

       • Edge Enhancement: Off

       • xvYCC: Off

    White Balance Submenu

       • R-Offset: 25

       • G-Offset: 26

       • B-Offset: 25

       • R-Gain: 24

       • G-Gain: 23

       • B-Gain: 14

    Picture Options Submenu

       • Color Tone: Warm2

       • Size: Just Scan (“Just Scan” is Samsung’s name for their 1:1 pixel-mapping mode. When viewing television you may find that the “16:9” setting is preferable on some channels.)

       • Digital NR: Off

       • DNIe: (Not applicable using the Movie Mode setting)

       • HDMI Black Level: (YCbCr color-difference signals over HDMI will result in a ghosted setting. Applicable for RGB signals over HDMI only. When dealing with RGB signals I recommend that the end-user experiment with the HDMI Black Level settings in an effort to determine which setting provides the best performance.)

       • Film Mode: Off

       • Blue Only Mode: Off (Used only for setting Color and Tint controls)

       • Auto Motion Plus 120Hz: Off

    Setup Menu

       • Entertainment: Off

       • Energy saving: Off

It must be reiterated that many of the settings above represent approximate starting points. Using the proper tools the end-user should further optimize the display settings for the viewing environment and each video source.

The Samsung A650 series LCD TVs include a Blue Only Mode within the Picture Options menu. The Blue Only Mode (often found on very expensive professional displays,) uses only the blue signal from the input video signal, which thereby allows you to properly adjust the Color and Tint controls using a SMPTE “Alignment Color Bar Test Signal” (or SMPTE Color Bars for short) without the need for a separate blue filter; a VERY handy feature.

*(Note: “Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics” would be the best choice if you had to pick only one disc. In addition, ‘Rec.709’ compliant test signals should be preferred for ‘Rec.709’ compliant displays, i.e., HDTVs, and ‘Rec.601’ compliant test signals should be used for non-HD, 525- and 625-line ‘Rec.601’ compliant displays.)
