Calcium gelcaps plus Vitamin. D: they smell putrid--what gives?

I just bought some liquid-filled calcium 1200 plus D softgels. They smell rotten. The expiration date is Aug. 2010.

Anyone have an explanation other than storage? I just bought them 10 days ago.

I have fish oil pills and vitamin D3 5000 iu pills. They smell gross too. They smell the same, I wonder if its the pill shell...

I have some also. Expiration date is September 2012. Since they were purchased more than 90 days ago, Wal-Mart has a policy of not taking them back.
