The mass of the planet Mercury is 0.0553 times the mass of Earth. Mercury is very nearly spherical, with a mean radius of 2.44×10^6 m. Calculate the mean density of Mercury.

Data: Mass Earth = 5.97×10^24 kg.

  1. Density = mass/volume

Mass of Mercury = 0.0553 x mass of Earth

    0.0553 x 5.97 x 10^24

    3.30141 x 10^23

Volume of Mercury = volume of a sphere

    Equation for volume of a sphere = 4/3 x pi x r^3

    = 4/3 x pi x (2.44x10^6)^3

    mass / volume = density

    = 5425.5 kgm^-3
