Is there a MS Excel formula I can use to calculate the speed (MPH) based on distance and time. Example is 100 meters was run in 9.69 seconds, how can I determine how fast that was in (MPH) ?thanks

  1. For a 100 meter race, use this formula (in a cell i.e. B1):

    =223.7/A1

for: A1 containing the race time, in seconds.

Example, if A1 contains 9.82 (seconds)

Then B1 will calculate 22.7931 (MPH)

EDIT.... (In case the reply to your e-mail fails)

To convert from meters/second to MPH:

    1 meter/second * 3600 seconds/hour * 1mile/1609.344 meters = 2.237 MPH

But is is a 100 meter race, so that number gets multiplied by 100 to 223.7

    So, 100 meter / 1 second = 223.7 MPH ... pretty fast

    100 meters / 10 seconds = 22.37 MPH

    100 meters / 9 seconds = 24.85 MPH

    etc.

    etc.

Since you are entering race *times* , you need to divide 223.7 by the race time to get the racers speed in MPH.
