  1. this is a bit complicated at the moment. Rafa is ALREADY no.1

he's not no.1 in the computer rankings because of the following 2 reasons:

the tournaments of Toronto and Cincinnati have been held later in the year 2007 than 2008 (due to the olympic games this year), so the 52 weeks are not over yet. the points gained in these 2 tournaments still remain until the 11th resp. 18th of Aug.

the score as it is right now

    Fed: 6605 points

    Nad: 6305 points

but effectively it should be (after deducting the points from Toronto 2007)

    Fed: 6255

    Nad: 6105

now that Fed already lost in the 3rd round he will lose further 425 points and Nadal already won 75 points for reaching the 3rd round (he has no points to defend from 2007 because he lost in his opening round)

    therefore the actual points are

    Nad: 6180 + ?

    Fed: 5830

but the ATP has to wait with deducting the points until the 52 weeks are over. therefore they calculate the rankings this way:

    Fed: 6605 + 75 = 6680

    Nad: 6305 + 500 (if he win the tourny) = 6805

    runner-up (350 points) wouldn't be enough 6305 + 350 = 6655

therefore Nadal has to win Cincy to become the new no.1 next monday Aug 4

    added:

it's even more complicated. i forgot to deduct the 75 points from Dubai of Nadal due to the 18 countable tournaments rule. so the ranking would be after Cincy if Nadal win

    Fed: 6680

    Nad: 6305 + 500 - 75 = 6730 -----> new no.1

  2. if nadal wins tournament he would be no. 1

can he lose to someone , anyone

i dont want him to be no. 1

  3. Nadal needs to win the Cincinnati Masters to take the number 1 spot.

  4. cetting there

  5. if he gets to the semi finals yes nadal #1

  6. no he needs to win cincy if he doesnt he still can do it at the olympics or us open.. and the way he is playing hes the favorite to win everything these days

  7. "After all the complex calculations coming into this week, it's very simple for Nadal now: reach the semifinals.

If Nadal wins the Cincinnati title, he will be No. 1 next Monday itself.

If Nadal reaches the Cincinnati final, it looks like he will become No. 1 the following week anyway. That's when players lose their points from Montreal last year. Federer will lose the points he made for reaching the final last year while Nadal will only lose what he got for reaching semifinals – a net gain that should be enough to move him ahead by about 100 points.

Even a semifinal in Cincinnati will guarantee Nadal the No. 1 spot after the Olympics – points from last year's event in Cincinnati come off that week, and once those are gone, Federer will drop behind Nadal no matter how the two do at the Olympics."
