Jason leaves Detroit at 7:00 PM and drives at a constant speed west along I-96. He passes Ann Arbor, 40 mi from Detroit, at 7:50 PM.

Express the distance traveled in terms of the time (in hours) elapsed.

d(t)=??? I need an equation from the above word problem, please help!

  1. distance travelled  =  speed * time taken

    Let us calculate speed

    distance  = 40 miles

    timetaken    = 50  minutes  = 50/60 of Hour  5/6

    speed =   40 div 5/6  =  40 * 6 /5  = 48 miles / hr

    d(t)  = 48t             ( t in hours)
