Question:

Calf Muscles Hurt When Jogging?

Alright so I wanted to start running recently, I'm not overweight or anything just thought it would be good for me. I used to be able to run very long distances no problem but now not even two minutes on a tredmill my calf muscles will hurt to the point where I can't run any more. Any solutions?

  1. Are you stretching gently before working out?  Are you drinking enough water before and after?  How's your salt intake?  If you have been sweating a lot, you might try increasing your salt intake slightly.  Low potassium levels can also give you leg cramps.

  2. eat bananas

  3. Mostly, keep at it.  As soon as your leg muscles are back in shape they won't hurt when you run.  I have the same problem every time I go a long time without running a lot and start training again.

But some other things you can do: stretch before and after you run to loosen up your muscles, do some calf exercises seperate from your running to build up strength and endurance, and doing some running off the treadmill might help sort out any kinks in your running mechanics.  If it's not getting better after a 2-3 weeks of exercise and stretching, and you're still in agonizing pain, you should see your doctor.  Good luck!

  4. welll im a track runner and a swimmer and i think the problem is that your not stretching those muscles enough. you need to stretch before you run. and make sure you stretch after you run that is also important. but make sure you ice your calf muscles down every time they run.

  5. what i believe happen is that you used to running long distances then stop for a while once you stop the muscle start to relax, because you us to doing long distant you over work your muscle causing they to contact rapidly that's why they hurt (no pain no gain) keep using the treadmill an it will be alright

  6. its casue your out of shape, suck it up and quit being a weenie
