Question:

Calf soreness with no reason?

Today my calf has been extremely sore for no apparent reason...I am bigtime into sports (specifically basketball and baseball) but for the past few months I have been completely inactive. I am anything but a healthy eater, and my parents always joke about me dying of a heart attack at the age of 20...I am 17 right now. I am 6 ft 4 in tall and 210 lbs.

the soreness is mostly located right below the bulk of the calf muscle, where it starts tapering off to my ankle. Should I be worried about anything?

  1. I would not be worried.  You say your calf is sore for no reason at all, but 9 times out of 10 there is something that was done to cause that soreness.  I carried groceries into the house and was sore the next day across my shoulders.  I would not think that would cause it, except I remembered I did carry groceries.  Especially if you haven't been active recently it is much easier to get sore for "no reason".   Now if the pain becomes super severe, or does not go away in a week or so you should see a doctor.  One time I was in extreme pain, and wanted to cry one time, found out I had torn a muscle doing pilates of all things.

  2. Its hard to tell from what you described.  From the best case scenario it could be a bruise or a strained muscle.  Did you bump it, did you play some sports recently?  Worst case scenario is a blood clot.  Is it hot, reddened, swollen?  If the pain persists or gets worse, I would see a physician.

  3. Do some stretching.

Eat bananas each day for the potassium they have.

Magnesium & Calcium 400-500mg/day.  They both affect muscle contraction & relaxation.

Make sure your shoes are in good condition.

    Good luck

  4. your inactivity is a reason for your calf soreness..

    - do your fitness physical exercise daily

    - try out calf stretching, massage and icing

    - eat calcium and potassium rich foods like milk and banana

    - make walking as your daily activity

don't worry, you are just 17 now and you will be live for more than 100 years. calf sore is a simple thing. follow that what i said before, and get well soon..
