Calgary Flames’ 21st overall pick Mark Jankowski chooses to play for Providence College instead of USHL
Mark Jankowski, who was picked 21st overall in the first round of the 2012 NHL draft, had offers from Dubuque Fighting Saints of United States Hockey League (USHL) and was expected to play from them but young Jankowski has chosen to play for Providence
College instead.
Providence College is a university hockey team which features in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is a non-professional side whereas Dubuque Fighting Saints is a professional side that features in USHL, one of the most prominent and best
hockey leagues of the world.
And after thinking about it for more than a month, the young player finally came up with a decision that college hockey is the right way to go.
Calgary Flames are apparently happy with his decision and have no problem as they have not intervened or stood in the way. Their staff only had good things to say about their prospect when they talked about him last month. Calgary Flames’ assistant general
manager John Weisbrod, had said that Jankowski is raw talent and will develop. Weisbrod also talked about Jankowski’s physique, his height, his weight, his athleticism as he said,
“He’s raw, he’s young, he’s still got to cross the crocodile-infested waters and develop properly — like, it’s a long way from draft day to play in the NHL. But the physical attributes this guy has. The athleticism. The skating. The hands. The fact that
he’ll likely be playing at six-four, 215”.
The organisation of Dubuque Fighting Saints was disappointed at not having the services of young Jankowski but wished him the best of luck and also praised him as a kid, his family and in their opinion Mark would have benefited in their culture perfectly
as general manager and coach of Dubuque, Jim Montgomery said,
“Although we are disappointed in not having the opportunity to work with Mark, we wish him the best of luck in Providence as he continues his student athletic career. Mark is a good kid from a great family and would have fit in nicely with our culture.”
Mark Jankowski had started his career with St. Catherine’s Falcons in Ontario, before playing for Stanstead College for couple of years representing them in Capital Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) and Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL).
