Calgary Flames’ GM Jay Feaster tight-lipped over choice of new head coach-NHL News
Calgary Flames’ general manager, Jay Feaster, who has a number of problems before him to sort out has remained tight-lipped over the matter of hiring a new coach for the team.
It’s been more than a month that Flames’ outgoing coach, Brent Sutter, said to have mutually agreed with the management on parting ways with the team.
Almost the entire National Hockey League (NHL) community is waiting for a move by Flames on who will be their next coach, since then.
While the mood prevalent at Flames’ headquarters has reflected on the laid-back approach of the GM, he apparently seems to be not in any hurry to commence the hiring process.
The delay is particularly a point of concern for certain quarters, other than the GM himself, given that three other teams are also in need of a head coach. They are the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.
In absence of any progress towards the hiring, the official seems to be preoccupied with some of other issues, which he inherited from the previous management and need urgent solution.
One among those is the matter of hefty deals that former managers have landed to some of the players even though their performance remains unnoticeable.
This includes Matt Stajan’s four-year, $14 million extension and Niklas Hagman’s $3 million, a year contract.
As a result of those deals, the team has $11 million coming off the books this season and this bars them from re-signing some of their key players off the free agency.
While the manager can get himself excused on those matters, some commentators are keen on knowing his choice.
Hiring of the coach is even more important for the GM himself as the decision will be linked and determine his future with Flames.
He is in first year as the GM and his approach to the team’s rebuilding is not crystal clear yet.
Since the official has remained totally silent over the move and choice of the new coach, many game commentators find it too difficult to speculate anything around his approach.
They want to know whether he will be going out to find a completely new face or install someone recycled with a certain amount of experience on his resume.
Irrespective of the choice, Flames are set to have a fourth coach in a span of five years.
