Calgary Flames’ Jarome Iginla is happy that trade rumours have been quashed
Mention the Calgary Flames to a hockey fan, and you'll surely hear the name of long-time Flames captain Jarome Iginla, one of the greatest leaders in the National Hockey League today.
Although Iginla is one of the most respected members of the Flames, his name was recently mentioned in rumours speculating that Calgary was planning to ask him to waive his no-trade clause
so that the team could potentially trade him. However, after meeting with a member of the team’s front office staff, the rumours were promptly quashed, much to Iginla’s relief.
“Yeah, I talked to the team,” Iginla told
The Vancouver Sun. “They just reassured me that wasn’t in the plans. I’m focused on helping us climb up (in the standings) here.”
The man known affectionately as “Iggy” had an impressive performance in the Flames’ last game, a 5-4 overtime loss to the Detroit Wings on Sunday 21 November. He scored a pair of goals,
which were his fourth and fifth of the reason, respectively.
“You try not to think about it,” Iginla said of the rumours. “Trade rumours are always part of it. But definitely, I appreciate the support. It definitely helps to focus.”
By his own admission, reading about the trade rumours often made him feel uncomfortable, but it made his parents feel even more so.
“I think it’s hardest probably on mom and dad,” Iginla said. “I’m still their little kid in their eyes. So I guess it’s tough to read stuff when things aren’t going so well. But they’ve
all been really supportive."
With the rumours now officially quashed, Iginla can return to leading his team to a possible playoff spot later in the season.
The Flames return to action on Monday 22 November, when they will travel to Uniondale, New York to do battle with the New York Islanders.
