Calgary Flames’ Sven Baertschi reveals that he paid for his parents when he was at Winterhawks
Sven Baertschi, a professional ice hockey player from Switzerland, who plays for Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League (NHL) and Abbotsford Heat in the American Hockey League (AHL) nowadays, defended his former team Portland Winterhawks by giving
the statement in their favour.
Baertschi played for Winterhawks for the seasons, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 and his former team has been accused to breaking the player laws and regulations. But the player clarified that he had paid for his parents’ travelling when they came over to watch
him in action.
The forward who plays as a winger, has his family living in Switzerland and told that he paid the expenses of his family because he had signed with the Calgary Flames at that moment and he had the same treatment and privileges as the other players had, as
he said,
“My parents only came over once and I paid fully for that. I was able to pay for it because I was already signed with the Flames. In Portland, I got treated the exact same way as anybody else on the team.”
The player was very disappointed when he got to know the news of his former team being penalised and deprived of the Draft picks. His team was also fined heavily and had their coach suspended after the event.
Baertschi thinks that Winterhawks’ organisation has very good people who did not deserve what happened to them. He thinks that they have not broken any law at all and were completely right in everything they did, as he said,
“It happens sometimes that you try to do something good for somebody and, in the end, you get kicked in the a*s. I think this is a good example of that. I know I’m so close to all the people (in Portland) and they’re such great people”.
Baertschi definitely knows that Winterhawks played a great role in grooming him as a player and his time with them was a great one. He knows that Winterhawks changed his career by giving him the opportunities and as he played 113 games for them and scored
179 points.
