Calgary Flames are on fire with third straight win
After being humiliated 4-0 by the Edmonton Oilers in their season opener, the Calgary Flames have bounced back in a big way winning three straight, and five of their last six, while defeating the Oilers
for the second time in a row in a 5-4 shootout on Tuesday.
How it happened
All the first period goals were scored on the power play with the Flames scoring twice from Brendan Morrison and Jay Bouwmeester, with a goal from Edmonton's Kurtis Foster sandwiched in between.
The Flames then jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second period getting goals from Curtis Glencross and a shorthanded marker from Morrison.
Oilers rookie forward, Jordan Eberle, scored his third of the season with only 17 seconds left in the period to give his team hope going into the third.
The Oilers did manage to claw their way back and collect a point as Magnus Paajarvi and Tom Gilbert each got their second of the season sending the game into overtime.
With no goals in the extra frame the game went to a shootout where Alex Tanguay scored the only goal to give the Flames the win.
What they're saying
Although they got the win, Flames head coach Brent Sutter was irked by how his team let the Oilers back into the game.
"Let it be a good lesson for us," Sutter said. "Kipper came up big in the shootout. It's still two points. It's a big win. We know what happened. You just deal with it and get ready and move on for your
next one."
Sutter further commented on how Eberle's goal late in the second period got his team off track.
"It's a 4-1 game, and you give up a goal with 16 seconds left in the period... you've got to come in and you've got to regroup," he said. "You've got to get back and focus on what we do as a team. I thought
we let that bother us to some degree. We got off track there for a bit and got away from what we do."
On the flip side, Oilers coach Tom Renney decided to take away whatever positives he could from the game, and was happy with his team's performance despite the loss.
"We could have allowed ourselves to be pushed out, and we didn't do that," he said. "That's really important. It does take a lot of intestinal fortitude to play in this League in the first place, never
mind come from behind."
The Flames now find themselves alone atop the Northwest Division as they prepare to take on the Colorado Avalanche at home on Thursday 28 October.
After a promising start to the season, the Oilers are back to where they were last season – last place in the Western Conference. They travel to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets on Thursday.
