Calgary Flames beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-2 in a mid table clash

The third match to take place on Thursday was the Atlanta Thrashers playing host to the Calgary Flames. The match was played at the Philips Arena and was expected to be a tight one given the fact that the teams were pretty close in the league table. Calgary
Flames were in good form winning six games in a row and didn’t let the streak snap as they won this match 4-2 as well.
Mark Giodarno, defenceman of the Flames was named the star selection of the match for his brilliant defence coupled with a goal and an assist.
Both teams started the match attacking from the very first minute and it looked as if a goal was on our way but this didn’t happen. Shots were bombarded on both goals but the goal keepers and the defence did a pretty decent job.
However, the Calgary Flames were in good form and had a lot of confidence in their game which could be seen from the technical part of their game. The Flames despite being the away side managed to score in the 5th minute to get into the lead.
The Flames and Thrashers both continued to attack as the period moved on. The puck was regularly seen going to and fro on the pitch but no goals were scored and the period ended with the Flames leading 1-0 going into the break. During the course of the period,
Thrashers made 7 goal attempts while the Flames made 10 goal attempts.
The second period proved to be very productive as there were quite a few goals scored during the second period. Bryan Little got his name on the score sheet scoring through a brilliant shot in the very first minute for the Thrashers to level the scores.
It took some time but the Flames started to come up with attacks too but they couldn’t manage to score. In fact their midfield got very weak and this resulted in the Thrashers scoring once again in the 12th minute through Anthony Stwart from a
decent strike to get into the lead.
However, the Flames knew that they needed to score as soon as possible if they were to have any chance of winning. The away side did just that, scoring through Brendan Morrison in the very next minute to level the scores once again. The period ended with
the Thrashers making 10 goal attempts in the second period while the Flames made 8 goal attempts.
The final period was expected to be very tight 20 minutes of play. Both teams defence was on top and the offence was very well dealt by them. Though there were chances for both sides but it was the Flames who scored in the 15th minute through
Mikael Backlund from a decent strike to get into the lead.
Though both teams attacked and the game was swinging in each teams favour every now and then. However, it was Flames who managed to seal the match with a goal in the final minute through Curtis Glencross from a brilliant wrap around shot to win the match
4-2 in the end.
During the course of the final period, Flames made 6 goal attempts while the Thrashers made 7 goal attempts.
