Calgary Flames bounce back 4-1 against Detroit Red Wings -NHL Match Update
Detroit lost their sixth straight matchup after the Calgary Flames destroyed the Red Wings, 4-1, to bounce back from a 5-1 loss against the Vancouver Canucks, on Thursday night, November 3, 2011, at the sold-out Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, United
States.
The Red Wings had won their first five straight, a streak which ended after their first loss of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season against the Washington Capitals, 7-1, which has ever since devastated the team.
This is the first time that Detroit has gone 0-6 since February 2008.
Regardless of the situation, Detroit’s veteran forward, Henrik Zetterberg, believes that his team will in time make a comeback.
"We have to stick together as a team in here", said Zetterberg. "It doesn't really matter what we say we're going to do or what tactics we're going to use. We just have to go out and do it right. We have to stick together and believe in ourselves and keep
going".
Calgary failed to extend their winning streak to three in a row after facing a loss against Vancouver, but with a huge win against Detroit, Flames head coach, Brent Sutter, believes his team is finally on its way to getting back on track.
"It's part of what we're about and when we do it the right way we're successful", Sutter said. "Part of being a good defense is you've got to be a good blocked-shot team. There's a price you've got to pay to do that and it's something we address and talk
about as a group. We certainly had it tonight".
Lee Stempniak opened the scoring with less than five minutes to play in the opening period.
Flames captain, Jarome Iginla, extended the teams’ lead with his third of the season in the opening five minutes of the second on their second power play opportunity of the night.
Daniel Cleary added Detroit’s first and his inaugural goal of the season on a power play of their own, but Calgary’s dominance in the third washed away the goals significance.
Iginla added his second of the night nearly midway through while Olli Jokinen made the insuring goal at the 18:42 mark in the third period while capitalising on another power play to secure the match.
