Calgary Flames decide to keep local city Lacrosse team, Calgary Roughnecks, running –NHL Team Update
Calgary Flames has much more set rather than just playing good hockey. It is determined to keep its city teams alive and well so that fans can keep on enjoying their favourite sports.
A little out of the hockey world, Calgary Flames purchased its local city lacrosse team, Calgary Roughnecks, on the verge of shutting down due to multiple restraints which were slowly beginning to get out of control.
The Roughnecks, a team in the Western Division of the National Lacrosse League, had been facing financial constraints due to not having their own playing stadium and not enough revenue generating methods.
The only way they were making money was through small advertisements and ticket sales, which were gradually slowing down.
It was not due to the lack of performance, since the club had been making the playoffs every year since 2002, but because of being in dire need of facilities.
Brad Banister, owner and general manager of Roughnecks was slowly being forced to close it down.
"It is time to call out the groups that need so desperately to step up," Banister said. "When I look around the city and witness that every professional team or performing arts group of Calgary has a building or facility to use that somewhat gives them a
chance for survival, it saddens me."
That is until Calgary Flames came to the rescue and offered to adopt the club more than really purchase it.
“I am extremely pleased we were able to do a deal with the Calgary Flames that will ensure the Calgary Roughnecks will stay in the community that has stood by them for the last ten years”, said Brad Banister about having Flames purchase the Lacrosse club.
It was Flames President & CEO, Ken King, who made the deal and decided that Calgary Roughnecks should remain in the city due to its great performance and entertainment to fans everywhere.
Banister was certainly saddened at selling the team, which he brought up from the grass-root level a decade ago, but knew it would be best for the team.
