Calgary Flames defeat the defending champions Chicago Blackhawks 3-1
One of the interesting games of Monday was the Calgary Flames playing host to the defending champions, Chicago Blackhawks who were looking for a win to strengthen their chances of a play-off position finish. The match took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The game was pretty much and scores were level as the teams went into the final period where Calgary Flames scored twice to win 3-1 in the end. Curtis Glencross, winger of the Calgary Flames was named the star selection for his important game winning goal
in the final period.
Chicago Blackhawks made a couple of goal attempts in the first minute of the period which upset the defensive line of the Flames. However, the home team regrouped and came up with a dominating a performance.
The first few shots were only that Hawks could manage during the first 20 minutes of play. Things heated up with the passage of time but it was Flames who were on fire. Attacks after attack were constructed with powerful shots fired on goal at end of the
play. Calgary Flames took the lead with a goal in the 15th minute. The goal was scored by Mikael Backlund from a brilliant backhand shot.
Calgary Flames continued to dominate proceedings till the very end of the period and led 1-0 as the period ended. During the course of the period Chicago Blackhawks made just three goal attempts while Calgary Flames made 10 goal attempts.
The second period was evenly matched between the two teams throughout the 20 minutes of play. The puck was seen going up and down the ice with the game catching up a lot of pace. However, defending champions managed to score through Patrick Kane from a decent
strike in the 6th minute to level the scores.
Both teams continued to attack and fire shots on goal but no further goals were scored despite some easy goal scoring chances coming for both teams. The period ended with both teams making 11 goal attempts during the period.
The final period saw both teams making a cautious start to the match. There were fewer shots on goal compared to the previous period. Hawks took early control of the game firing shots and coming up with some decent pieces of play.
Calgary Flames knew that if they wanted to win they had to keep up with Hawks so they also started to attack. The outcome was a very entertaining and productive period. It took some time but the first goal was scored in the 9th minute by Curtis
Glencross from a quick fired shot that caught the goal keeper by surprise.
Calgary Flames kept on attacking as they were aware that a slender one goal advantage wasn’t enough. The home team sealed the match with another goal in the final minute of the period which was scored by Rene Bourque from a brilliant flick shot after a superb
assist by Captain Jarome Iginla.
The period and the match ended with the Calgary Flames winning the match 3-1 as they made 7 goal attempts while Hawks made 9 goal attempts in the final period.
