Calgary Flames destroy the Colorado Avalanche
It wasn’t any less than another making of the Valentine’s Day Massacre on Monday night, where Calgary annihilated the Colorado Avalanche by an embarrassing 9-1 at the Pepsi Centre in Denver, Colorado in front of a 14,000 plus crowd of Av’s fans.
Colorado fans expected their long-time favourite player Peter Forsberg to make his debut tonight after playing two games with the Avalanche on their road trip, but it was later found out that he will be retiring and not participating in tonight’s event.
Forsberg, one of the best in the NHL has been dealing with foot related injuries for a number of years now which have finally taken their toll on him leading him to quite the game.
Instead of seeing Forsberg, fans were witness to one of Colorado’s biggest disappointments in history, receiving a thrashing by the Calgary Flames who have now once again clinched a play-off spot and are tied for 7th place in the Western Conference.
Struggling Avalanche
The Av’s are having one of their worst seasons to date and are besieged by loss time after time again, as of now; they are on a consecutive losing streak of 8 games, the worst in the NHL.
"We have to find a way to get out of it," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said, also adding that Colorado is a young team right now and is just looking for that spark that will allow it to take off and start winning some games.
The Flames aren’t the type of team that would feel sorry for their emotional state of mind at the moment, because as playoffs get closer and closer, it gets harder to clinch that play-off berth with so many teams who are behind only by a point or two; one
match can mean you’re in or you’re out.
"They were flatter than usual and you could see some pretty good reasons. It was a pretty emotional day for them. Also with them trying to stop their streak. We know how it is. We've been on that side where you have a lot of pressure,” said Calgary captain
Jarome Iginla.
Calgary Blasted All Three Rounds
It was hard for the Flames to stop once they started to burn, multiple players put up double numbers in the areas of goals and assists. David Moss shot it through opposite goalie, Peter Budaj, within 18 seconds of the first, and they kept on coming from
there. They scored a total of five in the first, slowing down in the second period and letting Colorado’s Daniel Winnik get one, making it 5-1 at the end of the first 40 minutes.
The Avalanche crowd was pin drop silent, as they knew what was going to happen in the third but tried to not think about it.
Calgary ferociously entered into the final period, Alex Tanguay’s goal at 40 seconds lit up the red light, which wasn’t going to turn off for a while, when 3 more kissed the net along with the last with a little over a minute to go. It was as if Calgary
was playing with the Avalanche, practicing their aim from far and wide.
Jerome Iginla and Curtis Glencross both got two goals recorded for themselves alongside David Moss and Olli Jokinen picking up a goal and three assists each.
“We’re playing with confidence, moving the puck, controlling with the puck, playing the way we want to play and gained momentum from our start,” said a very content Flames head coach Brent Sutter.
Calgary can now feel easy, as this will be their last away game this month, facing the Dallas Stars on Wednesday will surely give them a challenge they’ll enjoy. As for Colorado, it’s more on the road than home, and that’s not something the Avalanche seem
ready for right now.
