Calgary Flames heat up with fourth straight over Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 in shootout -NHL Update
Calgary Flames have finally begun to show some hope of advancing in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season by winning their fourth straight match against Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-1, in a shootout on Tuesday night, December 27, 2011, at
the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, United States.
Having gained a huge boost by eight consecutive points, Calgary is now up in the Western Conference at the ninth position and tied with eighth place Nashville Predators with 40 points. If the Flames continue to stay hot in the upcoming few games, Calgary
will be able to enter the top eight in the division and easily defend their position as the season progresses.
The temperature rose in the arena as Cory Sarich exchanged fists with Derek Dorsett; both were awarded five minute major penalties for fighting as both teams failed to score in the opening period.
Derick Brassard added his fourth of the season and the first for Columbus a little over midway through the second to give them a lead entering the final period of regulation.
Miikka Kiprusoff managed to keep the Flames alive throughout the contest as he blocked 27 shots throughout and 15 attempts in the second period alone.
"We got a huge effort from Kiprusoff", Calgary Flames forward Blake Comeau, said. "He kept us in it the whole way. Jarome scored a big goal in the third. The game wasn't pretty, but when you're in a race like we are, you'll take two points any way you can
get `em".
Calgary’s captain, Jarome Iginla, added the Flames’ first and equalising goal 3:06 into the third period on their only power play opportunity of the final 20 minutes for his 14th of the season which allowed them to force an overtime extension.
Iginla came up strong once again, this time in the shootout after overtime passed by without deciding anything, as he fired the puck past Columbus goalie, Steve Mason, on their first attempt while Blue Jackets failed on all three.
"We found a way", Calgary coach, Brent Sutter, said. "Kipper was obviously huge for us. He played outstanding. Jarome got a big power-play goal. Obviously, to win it in a shootout, it's a big win".
