Calgary Flames heats up as it thrashes Atlanta Thrashers by 4-2 at Thrashers’ home ice – NHL Updates
Oh boy does Calgary Flames seems unstoppable as it continues its winning streak, making it 6 in a row which is its longest in over two years. It looks fierce and dedicated to reach the Stanley Cup this season having had the last opportunity back in 2005,
since then they looked to be sluggish but now a spark has caused Flames to burn like wild fire. Annihilating Atlanta Thrashers for the first time in over a decade, Calgary defeated them 4-2 on Thursday night at the Phillips Arena in front of a 12,984 Thrashers
crowd.
Calgary Flames was once the home team of Atlanta before being shifted to Calgary.
That’s right, it was once known to be Atlanta Flames then was shifted giving birth to the Thrashers.
Since the move, Thrashers hadn’t been able to defeat Atlanta having tried seven times.
Maybe it was the feeling of disappointing the home crowd but not anymore, the rejuvenated Flames is burning!
Calgary is moving up!
It stood at 13th position in the Western Conference before the beginning of the All-Star Break, but now after all these wins and outstanding performances, it is moving up in the standings.
Calgary is currently tied with Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks for the 9th position but if it continues what it’s doing now, it won’t be long before making a playoff’s spot, reserved only for Flames.
"I guess this was our lucky season", Flames’ forward, Alex Tanguay, said, who assisted Brendan Morrison for a goal, tying the game 2-2 at the end of the second period.
How did the match go?
The first period of the game was a little slow overall but Calgary’s defenseman, Mark Giordano, got through Thrashers’ tough defense to strike the net from the left circle making it 1-0 at the end.
Following the next 20 minutes seemed bad for Flames when Bryan Little of Atlanta scored in under a minute followed by Anthony Stewart making it 2-1 for Atlanta.
Ondrej Pavelec, goalie of the home team, played strong by stopping over 20 shots but wasn’t enough to the defending of counterpart Mikka Kiprusoff who made 22 saves.
"I don't know what to say", Ondrej Pavelec said. "We played good. We should have won. ... They got two lucky goals”, he said while commenting on the last 2 goals of the third period.
Kiprusoff completely shut down Thrashers in the final period, as rookie centre, Mikael Backlund, and Curtis Glencross both got unassisted goals with less than 6 minutes to go.
Glencross sealed the deal when he had a chance at the empty net, eyeing less than 50 seconds on the clock left.
Freddy Meyer, Atlanta’s defenseman, collapsed face down in the second period and was treated by paramedics on site.
It was later found out that he blacked out after taking hits from other players but is now under safe hands.
Calgary’s coach, Brent Sutter, seemed especially happy with the win and was confident in his team’s new found strategy for winning, while Atlanta’s coach. Craig Ramsay, felt the exact opposite but called it to be a good effort by his team.
