Calgary Flames looks to strengthen its playoff position as it faces Ottawa Senators at home ice
Bad luck
Oh Ottawa, oh poor, poor Ottawa. In the final match ups of the 2010-2011 season, ranking in the bottom three overall in the NHL, it has to face some of the best teams and some of those franchises who have found their winning strategies and are on a roll.
Senators are 0-8-2 in its last 10 games while Calgary is 7-1-2.
Having lost 10 consecutive games going in the All-Star Break and coming out, Senators hasn’t been able to perform the way it would like to.
It looked as if Jason Spezza was the reason for Ottawa’s lack of performance, but after returning after 15 games, it doesn’t appear to be the reason.
Losing recently to Vancouver Canucks, who are currently the top team of the NHL, Senators gave it all they got but were unable to recover in the third period.
"We've just got to figure out what we did well the second half of the game and bring that to our next game", Senators’ goalie, Spezza, said. Senators haven’t looked so bad since 1993.
Senators go against Calgary Flames, a day after a wild faceoff with Canucks, a team who has showed that if it really put its mind to it, nothing is unachievable.
The event will go down in the Calgary Scotiabank Saddledome being their second and final meeting this season.
Good luck
Calgary has set the temperature to the max as it keeps on outperforming and exceeding expectations in every match, securing a playoff’s spot not so long ago against defending champs, Chicago Blackhawks.
A win against Senators can certainly be useful for them, raising its status from the current 8th in the Western Conference to the top-five.
"It's a great accomplishment for us", Curtis Glencross of Flames said. "We put ourselves in a hole early in the year and we've bounced back. We've had some adversity and we've shown a lot of courage to come back".
Calgary Flames is considered to be one of the greatest teams playing in overtime or in shootouts, a weak point for Senators which can prove dangerous for it going up against Calgary.
Mikka Kiprusoff is also Calgary’s secret weapon, who has acquired a nickname “Mikka Shutout Kiprusoff” this season.
Over the previous 20 games Flames has played, it has lost only 3 times in regulation time.
It will take a miracle
Being number one, Vancouver could have slowed down for the Senators, but not Calgary.
There is no chance Flames will give Senators an opportunity, newly acquired playoff space is still unstable and depends on a few more games which will show where Flames is headed this season.
