Calgary Flames lose second straight of new regular season 5-2 to St. Louis Blues -NHL Match Update
Calgary faced it second straight loss of the new 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as St. Louis Blues beat the Flames, 5-2, on Monday, October 10, at the sold out Scottrade Centre in Saint Louis, Missouri.
For St. Louis, it was also a first home win of the season after coming out of a 4-2 loss against Nashville Predators earlier on Saturday.
The Flames were down by one by the end of the second period and could have easily pumped up their game to at least tie up the match to force an overtime extension, if not win the match, but Blues managed to lock them down.
"It really starts with our return", said Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, whose goal early in the second period broke a 1-1 tie and put the Blues ahead for good. "Our back check’s been great. That really doesn't even allow teams to set up in our zone.
... We've just been doing a good job of blocking shots and getting pucks out as quickly as possible".
Calgary’s top forward, Curtis Glencross scored the opening goal for his second of the season with two minutes remaining before being halfway through the first period on an assist Olli Jokinen.
Alexander Steen scored with less than two minutes remaining to tie the match heading into round number-two.
Flames captain, Jarome Iginla, gave two penalties in the first period, both which were for high-sticking, the latter carrying over into the second period as well, giving St. Louis a 5-on-4 man advantage right away. Luckily, Calgary managed to kill off both.
Kevin Shattenkirk and Alex Pietrangelo widened the gap in favour of Blues with less than five minutes remaining in the second to, 3-1, as Jarome Iginla scored nearly a minute after St. Louis’ last on their third power play opportunity.
The third period was all St. Louis as Chris Stewart and Jason Arnott scored back-to-back and humiliated the Flames in their own defensive end.
"It's disappointing, but I think more than just a win, we need to find our game and to get our compete level up", Iginla said. "Tonight, we got outcompeted and outworked”.
Calgary continues its road trip on Thursday as they face-off against Montreal Canadiens. St. Louis Blues will also takeoff as they visit Dallas the same day going against the Stars.
